K12 Program Eligibility
I am an emergency medicine physician located outside the United States. Am I eligible to apply for the program?
The Neuro-EM program eligibility criteria include that applicants must be a clinically practicing emergency medicine physician at an academic institution with a research mission in the United States, as well as a citizen or noncitizen national of the United States or lawfully admitted for permanent residence.
I am conducting neurological research related to emergency medicine, but I am not a clinically practicing emergency medicine physician or pediatric emergency medicine physician. Am I eligible to apply for the program?
The Neuro-EM Program requires that applicants be clinically practicing in emergency medicine (pediatrics or adult). In other words, you must be board certified or board eligible in EM or pediatric EM.
I am in my 3rd faculty year. Am I eligible to apply to be a scholar?
Applicants must be within the first two years of your initial faculty appointment as Instructor or Assistant Professor (after residency or fellowship training) at the time of the Oct 1 application due date. Note: A faculty appointment during fellowship training does not count as your initial faculty appointment.
How is parental and medical leave accounted for in the program eligibility window?
Parental, medical, or other well-justified leave for personal or family situations of generally less than 12 months duration is not included in the 2-year faculty eligibility limit. Consistent with NIH practice, we will approve an extension of one year for childbirth within the 2-year eligibility window. Please send your information to the Neuro-EM Program Manager, Meagan Ramsey (maramsey@med.umich.edu) prior to preparing your application to obtain an extension approval.
I am conducting research that does not fit within the NINDS mission. Am I eligible to apply?
The Neuro-EM program will also accept applications for emergency care research in the neurological sciences that that falls in the missions of the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). If you are not sure if your topic is in scope, please send your tentative proposal title/topic and aims to the Neuro-EM Program Manager, Meagan Ramsey (maramsey@med.umich.edu) for review.
Will certain types or topics of emergency care research in the neurological sciences be prioritized for funding?
Any type of research is eligible (e.g., basic, clinical, translational, health services), and your research can focus on patients of any age (pediatrics, adults, geriatrics). We are not prioritizing a specific type or topic of research.
If I am not selected for funding this year, will I be allowed to reapply next year if I still meet the eligibility criteria?
Yes, resubmission applications will be accepted for those who continue to meet the program eligibility criteria (e.g., are in the first two years of initial faculty appointment).
I am an early career researcher interested in this program, but I do not meet all eligibility criteria. Is there a way I can still be involved?
Even if you are not eligible to apply for funding, you are welcome to attend our virtual Neuro-EM research and career development webinars. Please sign up for our email list via the contact form near the top of our home page so you receive webinar updates.
Pipeline Program
What type of support is provided through the Pipeline Program?
If you are chosen to participate in the Pipeline Program, the primary support provided is that you will be able to attend the Neuro-EM Scholars Program Annual Retreat, where you will receive grant writing training, attend career development sessions, and participate in networking events. Funds for your travel and lodging for the Retreat will be reimbursed, and meals will be provided. After the Retreat, you will also be invited to all Neuro-EM webinars. We anticipate Pipeline Program participants will then apply to be Neuro-EM K12 scholars within 1-2 years.
I am being nominated for the Pipeline Program. Do I need to describe a project idea in my personal statement on the nomination form?
Pipeline nominees are not required to describe a specific research project in their nomination form. However, candidates are encouraged to be as specific as possible about potential future research topics or questions and briefly describe any prior or ongoing research experience if applicable. Additionally, if you do have a project idea you might like to pursue in the next 1-2 years, you are welcome to briefly describe the project idea if this would help demonstrate your academic vision, neuro-related research interests, and why you would benefit from the program.
I applied for the Pipeline Program last year but was not chosen. Am I allowed to be nominated again this year?
Yes, we encourage prior Pipeline nominees who were not chosen to attend the Neuro-EM Retreat last year to work with their nominators again this year to submit an updated nomination form (or to consider submitting a K12 application if you are eligible).
I participated in the Pipeline Program last year and attended the Neuro-EM Retreat. However, I am not yet eligible to apply for the K12 this year. Am I allowed to be nominated for the Pipeline Program again this year (so I can attend the Retreat again)?
No, if you previously attended the Neuro-EM Retreat with the Pipeline Program, you will not be able to attend the Retreat again until the year you apply for the K12. This allows the Pipeline Program to invite new participants each year. We welcome K12 applications from all prior Pipeline participants once you are eligible. All K12 applicants are automatically expected to attend the Retreat to complete in-person interviews.
